This is kind of a big deal.
I’m not one of those people who wins things. And I’m a sucker for a raffle ticket or a business card drawing. If there’s a contest, I enter it - multiple times. But the calls never come. So you can imagine my complete shock when I was announced the winner of Launch Greensboro’s Demo Day last fall.
WHAT’S DEMO DAY?
The virtual event was the culmination of LaunchLab, a 14-week accelerator program for startups and founders organized by the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce. Every Monday night, I sat on Zoom alongside 11 incredible entrepreneurs, learning about sales, capital acquisition, market validation, and pitching to investors.
Demo day was my first shot at a real business pitch, and winning the competition was the last thing on my mind. And I was even more shocked to discover the prize... a second pitch! That’s right, I won an entry to Capital Connects, a signature showcase event running for over 18 years.
CAPITAL WHAT?
Capital Connects provides connections to entrepreneurs seeking capital, and startups in the past have raised over $15 million from local investors. It’s the real deal.
I whittled my four-minute pitch down to just two minutes, and I have to admit, I’m feeling a lot more confident going into this one. Don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely nervous. There’s so much more at stake (I mean, there could be over 300 people in attendance), but I’m still not too concerned with the outcome.
WHY IS THAT?
Entrepreneurship can be a pretty solo journey, at least in the beginning. Some days it feels like I’m doing all of this grinding alone, for very little monetary return. Having a real team of coaches, supporters, and cheerleaders has completely changed my life. It’s renewed my faith in myself, boosted my confidence, and given me clarity and focus. I’m finally building a solid foundation for Eliz Creative, and I no longer feel like an imposter when I call myself an “entrepreneur.”
Plus, it’s an honor just to be featured in the mix with such brilliant start-up bosses. These pitches are really going to blow you away.
AWESOME, HOW CAN I WATCH?
You can get your free ticket to the event on Wednesday, March 10, here. It’s on this new virtual event platform called Hopin, and you’re going to love it. The startups had the chance to try it out, and it feels so much like an in-person event.
I hope you will tune in and see what this next phase has in store for us. I think you might be surprised.
Warmly, Eliz
